Description

Gloucester Marmalade

A bold, locally inspired marmalade made with sweet and Seville oranges, Bramley apple juice and Gloucester dry cider.

Quick answer: Gloucester Marmalade is a handmade orange marmalade from The Artisan Kitchen, combining sweet oranges and Seville oranges with local Bramley apple juice and Gloucester dry cider. It has bright citrus flavour, gentle orchard notes and a fresh, rounded finish.

Gloucester Marmalade brings together citrus fruit and ingredients with a strong connection to our home county.

Sweet oranges provide juicy fruit flavour, while Seville oranges contribute the depth, peel character and gentle bitterness expected from a proper marmalade. Bramley apple juice softens and rounds the citrus, and Gloucester dry cider gives the preserve a clean orchard finish.

Every batch is handmade in small quantities in our Gloucestershire kitchen using traditional open-pan cooking, allowing the fruit and peel to develop naturally.

Choose this marmalade if you enjoy classic orange citrus with softer orchard notes and a distinctive Gloucestershire character.

Why This Marmalade Is Special

Two orange varieties
Sweet oranges bring fruitiness while Sevilles add depth and structure.

Local Bramley juice

Tasting Notes

Flavour: Bright orange citrus with Seville depth

Sweetness: Rounded and fruit-led

Bitterness: Gentle and balanced

Aroma: Orange peel with fresh orchard notes

Finish: Clean, lively and subtly cider-led

A Marmalade Inspired by Gloucestershire

This marmalade celebrates Gloucestershire through flavour. The oranges give it a classic citrus foundation, while Bramley apple juice and dry cider connect the recipe to the orchards and cider-making traditions of the county.

The apple juice does not make the marmalade taste like apple. Instead, it softens the sharper edges of the citrus and contributes a gentle fruit freshness.

The cider adds another layer of orchard character, creating a marmalade that feels familiar enough for breakfast but distinctive enough for cheese, glazes and savoury cooking.

How We Make It

We cook Gloucester Marmalade slowly in small open pans. This traditional method allows the citrus peel to soften while the syrup develops flavour and body.

The sweet and Seville oranges are balanced first, followed by the Bramley apple juice and cider. Careful cooking brings the ingredients together without losing the freshness of the fruit.

The finished marmalade is glossy, generous and citrus-led, with enough depth for savoury dishes and enough brightness for morning toast.

How to Enjoy It

  • Spread on warm toast, crumpets, sourdough or croissants
  • Serve with mature Cheddar, washed-rind cheese or creamy blue cheese
  • Brush over roast pork, duck, ham or sausages as a glaze
  • Whisk into salad dressings, marinades or pan sauces
  • Use in marmalade loaf cake, steamed sponge or bread and butter pudding
  • Spoon into a cheeseboard accompaniment or savoury gift hamper

Chef-crafted, small batch, preserving excellence.

Sarah’s Maker’s Note

The Bramley apple juice and cider are there to support the citrus rather than dominate it. Together, they soften the sharper Seville notes and give the finished marmalade a fresh orchard character that feels distinctly Gloucestershire.

Chef’s Tip

Warm a spoonful of Gloucester Marmalade with a splash of cider vinegar and a little stock. Brush it over roast pork, ham or duck near the end of cooking for a glossy sweet-sharp glaze.
