The 2017 award

The Artisan Kitchen’s Seville Orange Marmalade was named Ambient Product of the Year at the 2017 Great Taste Golden Fork Awards.

It followed a three-star Great Taste award and selection for the Great Taste Top 50 Foods, making 2017 one of the defining moments in the history of this traditional Seville marmalade.

Ambient Product of the Year

Some moments deserve a permanent place in a business’s story. For me, the 2017 Great Taste Awards will always be one of them.

That year, The Artisan Kitchen’s Seville Orange Marmalade received three Great Taste stars and was selected as one of the competition’s Top 50 Foods. It then progressed to the Golden Fork Awards, where it was named Ambient Product of the Year.

I had never properly recorded the whole story here. So, from The Artisan Kitchen archive, this is the story of a very special marmalade and a night I will never forget.

From blind tasting to the Golden Forks

From Three Great Taste Stars to Ambient Product of the Year

Great Taste products are judged blind, with branding and packaging removed so that the food itself takes centre stage. Judges assess what is in front of them: its aroma, flavour, texture, balance and overall eating quality.

Three-star products represent the highest level of recognition in the main Great Taste judging, with selected products going on to be considered for the Top 50 Foods and Golden Fork Awards.

The Artisan Kitchen’s Seville Orange Marmalade progressed through each of those stages in 2017 before being named Ambient Product of the Year.

If you would like to understand the judging system in more detail, I have also written about what a Great Taste Award means and how the blind-tasting process works.

The 2017 Great Taste Story

This original Great Taste film records the story behind The Artisan Kitchen’s award-winning Seville Orange Marmalade.

The marmalade behind the award

A Marmalade Made with Patience

Seville oranges have a character unlike sweet eating oranges. Their fragrant peel, natural acidity, pronounced citrus flavour and distinctive bitterness are precisely the qualities that make them such an extraordinary fruit for marmalade.

When I developed this marmalade, I was looking for the particular clarity that only Seville oranges can give: vivid citrus at the beginning, properly softened peel and a clean thread of bitterness at the finish. It needed to taste unmistakably of the fruit—not simply of sweetness—and to leave you wanting another spoonful.

The marmalade is made slowly in small batches, using the whole fruit and allowing the oranges the time they need. The process is guided by taste and texture rather than simply by a timer.

The recipe that won the 2017 Golden Fork remains part of The Artisan Kitchen’s Seville Orange Marmalade story today.

Sarah’s Kitchen Note

Seville oranges naturally bring together fragrance, acidity, bitterness and pectin. They demand care, though. The difference between a good jar and a great one is often in the small details: how the peel has softened, how clearly the fruit still tastes after cooking and whether sweetness, bitterness and acidity finish together rather than fighting one another.

The awards night

The Night Our Seville Orange Marmalade Won a Golden Fork

A second film from the 2017 Great Taste Golden Fork Awards records this wonderful moment in The Artisan Kitchen’s history.

A very personal moment

What the Golden Fork Meant to Me

The Artisan Kitchen began in Gloucester in 2011, inspired by fruit growing in my own garden and a determination not to let it go to waste. What began with one tree gradually became a business rooted in fruit, seasonality and the craft of preserving.

By 2017 I had spent years developing recipes, sourcing exceptional fruit and making batch after batch by hand. Even so, nothing quite prepared me for hearing that my Seville Orange Marmalade had been named Ambient Product of the Year.

Standing at the Golden Fork Awards as an independent chef and producer and seeing such a traditional jar of marmalade recognised at that level was both surreal and deeply affirming.

The award gave national recognition to a product made on a very small scale, but it also confirmed something in which I have always believed: exceptional ingredients, careful technique and close attention to flavour matter, whatever the size of the kitchen.

A lasting part of our story

One Golden Fork in a Much Longer Awards History

The 2017 award was not an isolated moment. Seville Orange Marmalade has continued to receive Great Taste recognition across multiple years, while The Artisan Kitchen’s wider collection has gone on to receive seven Golden Fork honours.

That larger story belongs on our dedicated Seven Golden Fork Awards page, where you can follow the awards across the years and the different preserves behind them.
